Step 1: Do not remove the NicoDerm CQ patch from its sealed protective pouch until you are ready to use it. NicoDerm CQ patches will lose nicotine to the air if you store them out of the pouch. Step 2: Choose a non-hairy, clean, dry area of skin. Do not put a NicoDerm CQ patch on skin that is burned, broken out, cut or irritated in any way. Make sure your skin is free of lotion or soap. Step 3: Take the patch out of the pouch. Save the pouch for use at time of disposal.
A clear, protective liner covers the sticky side of the NicoDerm CQ patch – the side that will be put on the skin. The liner has a slit down the middle to help you remove it from the patch.
With the sticky side facing you, pull half the liner away from the NicoDerm CQ patch starting at the middle slit. Hold the NicoDerm CQ patch at one of the outside edges (touch the sticky side as little as possible), and pull off the other half of the protective liner. Place liner back in the pouch. Save pouch for disposing of the patch after use.
Step 4: Immediately apply the sticky side of the NicoDerm CQ patch to your skin. Press the patch firmly on your skin with the heel of your hand for at least 10 seconds. Make sure it sticks well to your skin, especially around the edges. Step 5: Wash your hands when you have finished applying the NicoDerm CQ patch.
Nicotine on your hands could get into your eyes and nose, and cause stinging, redness or more serious problems. Step 6: After 16 or 24 hours, remove the patch you have been wearing. Fold the sticky ends of the used NicoDerm CQ patch together.
Place in its pouch and discard where it will be out of reach of children and pets. Even used patches have enough nicotine to poison children and pets. Wash your hands. Step 7: Choose a different place on your skin to apply the next NicoDerm CQ patch and repeat Steps 1 to 6. Do not apply a new patch to a previously used skin site for at least one week. We understand how frustrating it is when your patch does not stick.
Lack of adhesion may be attributed to hot weather, patient skin type, or activity. Please be sure you have applied the patch properly: Choose a non-hairy, clean, dry area of skin. Press the patch firmly on your skin with the heel of your hand for at least 10 seconds. Make sure it sticks well to your skin, especially around the edges. Do not use moisturizing soap or lotion prior to applying the patch. If you are using a moisturizing soap, try changing soaps or apply medical adhesive tape over the patch to help keep it in place.

The manufacturers do not recommend cutting patches in half but is it safe to do so and do they still work? Why would you cut patches?
One reason to cut patches is to adjust the dose of nicotine. For example, if one full strength patch is not relieving your cravings, you may want to try one and a half patches. On the other hand, you may want cut down your dose of nicotine by cutting a patch in half. There is no visible leakage from cutting a nicotine patch, although it is possible that small amounts of nicotine may be released from the cut edge.
Nicabate and Nicorette patches are already cut to different sizes in production and the normal patch edges are the same as a freshly cut edge. Always wash your hands after handling patches to remove any nicotine from your fingers. Do cut patches still work? Nicotine is distributed evenly across the patch, so cutting a patch results in a dose of nicotine proportional to the size of the piece used. In other words, cutting a 21 mg patch in half results in two 10.5mg patches. Each of these releases half of the dose of nicotine of a full strength patch.
Keep the backing layer on the unused part of the patch until it is needed to avoid nicotine loss from the exposed surface. Alternative to cutting Another option is to remove half of the backing layer only, apply the patch to the skin and cover the whole patch with tape. The next day, remove the remaining half of the backing layer, cover the exposed half and reapply. Recommendations Although nicotine patch cutting is not officially recommended and there has been very little research into the practice, it is likely to be safe and effective. It is important to wash your hands after handling a patch and to dispose of patches carefully as nicotine can be toxic, especially in children. Speak to your doctor if you notice any unusual feelings, such as nausea and sweating which may indicate that you are getting too much nicotine.

Nicotine patches may cause more harm than good as nicotine is carcinogenic, research suggests Nicotine patches have helped many smokers kick the habit, but new research suggests they may actually do more harm than good. Study found nicotine alone could cause cancer. The researchers, at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, say nicotine is such a powerful carcinogen that nicotine-infused products designed to help people give up smoking may not be safe. Nicotine is one of 4,000 chemicals found in cigarette smoke.
While many of these chemicals are recognised as carcinogens nicotine has, until now, only been considered addictive rather than carcinogenic. It is heavily used in smoking cessation products such as patches and gum. It is also now found in the increasingly popular e-cigarette.
But, the latest in a series of studies about the carcinogenic qualities of nicotine revealed it causes a cell’s DNA to mutate. The researchers found nicotine causes thousands of mutations called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in exposed cells, compared with control cells that are not exposed to it. These patterns are similar to those identified in cells experiencing oxidative stress, which is a known precursor to cancer. Nicotine exposure causes thousands of mutations in a cell's DNA and this could be a precursor to cancer ‘These results are important,’ said Dr Harold Garner, director of the institute's Medical Informatics and Systems Division. 'This is because for the first time they directly measure large numbers of genetic variations caused only by nicotine, showing that nicotine alone can mutate the genome and initiate a cancer state. ‘This is particularly timely since nicotine is used as a smoking cessation aid.’ Future studies will now focus on understanding the effects of long-term exposure of nicotine.

Nightmode: / TIFU April Fools. animals fucking up.
today I pranked is proudly sponsored by Olestra. Fuck up of the week: Current winner. 15 years ago, I decided to quit smoking. I tried nicotine gum, but hated it more than words can convey.
I decided to go with the patch. Nicotine patches were relatively expensive back then (more expensive than smoking!), so I came up with the brilliant idea of using each patch twice. I reasoned that each patch carried more nicotine than was actually absorbed by the body during the recommended wearing period, and that it should be able to deliver even into the next day.
I didn't think about the adhesive, and the next day, I stuck the patch back on. It fell off after a few minutes. I stuck it back on with a couple of band-aids.
Still fell off. In my frustration, I stuck it back on with a piece of duct tape.
It held very, very well. All was good till that night. I started to peel the tape off, but it hurt with all the little hairs on my skin, so I did what most people do with band-aids: I YANKED. After the stinging had subsided, I looked at my arm and saw blood! I looked at the tape, and there was the patch, along with several dime-sized patches of my skin embedded in the adhesive. (Needless to say, I resigned myself to using a patch just once.
And I haven't smoked in 15 years). First off, congrats on 15 years! That's a hell of an accomplishment and I'm proud of you!
Secondly, if you put duct tape fresh off the roll and onto your skin, it's possible to rip skin off. When I was a foolish young lass I thought I could skip all the messy hot wax bullshit and use it to remove leg hair. I have never done it again. It removed everything except the hair and I regretted the decision for days thanks to the reminder when anything brushed up against that poor hyper-sensitive strip on my shin.
